n8n, Make or custom development: how to choose for AI automation

  • Automation
  • n8n
  • Make
  • Custom development

Automating with artificial intelligence does not always require coding from scratch. Workflow tools such as n8n, Make or Power Automate connect applications and call AI models with little code. Custom development makes sense when the process grows in volume, rules or security requirements. This guide helps you choose.

What each option is

  • n8n: a workflow platform you can use in the cloud or host on your own servers, with nodes for AI models and agents.
  • Make: a cloud platform for connecting applications through visual scenarios.
  • Power Automate: Microsoft’s option, integrated with Microsoft 365 and other business services.
  • Custom development: your own software (for example an AI agent) with its own code, tests and deployment.

When a workflow tool is enough

  • Few steps and systems with available connectors.
  • Moderate volume and tolerance for occasional failures.
  • An internal team that can maintain the workflows.
  • Prototypes to validate an idea before investing more.

When custom development is the better option

  • High volume or demanding response times.
  • Complex logic: many rules, exceptions or chained decisions.
  • Security and audit: fine-grained permissions, detailed logs and sensitive data (see AI agent security).
  • Systems without an API or integrations with no connector.
  • Product: when the automation is part of what you sell.

Costs that are often overlooked

  • AI model usage, which grows with volume.
  • Workflow maintenance when connected applications change.
  • Time spent reviewing errors and exceptions.
  • Tool licences or infrastructure, depending on the plan.

How to migrate without starting over

A common path is to validate the process with a workflow tool and, when volume or rules justify it, move the critical parts to a custom agent while keeping simple workflows where they work. We explain it in AI automation vs. RPA.
